Afterglow

Afterglow was written after a long low period ended, but it is not a celebration record.

Nobody tells you when a low period is over. There is no line, no particular day. You just wake up one morning and yesterday was a little better than the day before, and that keeps happening for a few weeks until you admit you might be out. Recovery is an awkward state — you are not in pain, and you are not happy yet. You are just still lit, like the light that stays in the sky after the sun has gone.

The album is full of long tones and delay because I wanted the texture of afterglow: the main thing has already left, and what it left behind is still here. Almost none of the eight tracks have a hard ending. The tail of one bleeds into the start of the next.

Technically this is the first time I recorded entirely on analogue synths, without pitching or grid-aligning. People recovering are not in tune.
